She has a wealth of knowledge for community history, heritage and traditions, and remembers the early Whitney Pier community with its thriving businesses and vibrant cultures. She also recalls Marcus Garvey’s historic and exciting visit to Whitney Pier and the important message he delivered to the community. Edith Cromwell

Edith Cromwell was a teacher for over 20 years. She paved the way for race-equity in education when she successfully lobbied for her Inglewood students to be bussed to Bridgetown, where they could reap the benefits of its better funded education system. Mrs. Cromwell was also an Order of Nova Scotia beneficiary, an inductee to the W.P Oliver Wall of Honour, and the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Acadia University. She contributed to the Black Learners Association, the Black United Front and the Black Cultural Society/Centre.

Biodiagnostics (Atlantic) and cross-appointed to Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Pediatrics at the IWK Health Centre.

Sister Dorothy Moore, C.M., O.N.S

An exceptional and inspirational educator, a respected Elder, and a role model to many young Mi'kmaw students, Sister Dorothy Moore has devoted much of her time to the preservation and restoration of the Mi'kmaq language and culture. After many years as a teacher and principal in public schools and on reserve she joined the University College of Cape Breton as native education coordinator and native studies consultant. In 10 years, she saw native enrolment grow from 9 to 200 full-time and part-time students.Read more
