Nova Scotia - On the Olympic Stage
Nova Scotia will be on the world stage Tuesday, Feb. 16th when Nova Scotians on both Canadian coasts take part in Nova Scotia Day celebrations.
Front and centre at the Games will be Nova Scotia’s Olympic athletes. Cole Harbour’s Sidney Crosby will play in his first Olympic hockey game against Norway on Nova Scotia Day, with Dartmouth’s Sarah Conrad competing in Ladies’ Halfpipe Snowboarding two days later.
The many things that make our province vibrant and unique will be on display throughout the Olympics Games at the Atlantic Canada House pavilion, a joint effort between the Atlantic Provinces and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The pavilion will showcase all the East Coast has to offer, highlighting Nova Scotia as a great place to work, invest, learn, live and play.
Leading up to Nova Scotia Day, more than 400 guests will take part in the Friends and Family event on the evening of February 15. Guests will enjoy award-winning Nova Scotia wine and cheese from different parts of the province, followed by a performance from DRUM!. For details visit our Facebook Fanpage.
Nova Scotia's cuisine will be served up in Vancouver by four Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) students under the direction of NSCC Chef Instructor Peter Dewar.
“It is an absolute thrill to know that the skill and talent I see every day in the students I instruct will be placed on the world stage,” says Dewar. “Guests of Atlantic Canada House will be amazed by the dishes that our newest generation of talented chefs can create with Nova Scotia ingredients.”
More than 23 musical acts featuring 110 Nova Scotian performers as well as artists and artisans will also exhibit their work at the Olympics as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Nova Scotia Day will also be celebrated here at home, with a celebration in Halifax's Grand Parade and free access to Canada Games venues to kick off the one year countdown to the 2011 Canada Games. Schools in and around HRM will be celebrating by organizing activity days celebrating the 2010 Olympics and the countdown to the 2011 Canada Games.
Nova Scotia Business Inc. will host international business prospects at sporting events and ceremonies. The agency will also take advantage of business forums held in conjunction with the Games to highlight leading Nova Scotia companies and position the province for trade and investment opportunities.
